BCF is a not for profit organization that is part of the Base Camp Group, focusing on social and environmental aspects of responsible tourism. The organization describes its work as transforming lives through tourism. BCF was co-founded by two compatriots, Svein Wilhelmsen and Ole Bernt Frøshaug, both Norwegian citizens, and Kenya was chosen due to long-time experience from the region and network within the country. The very founding of the first camp in the Mara was due to an exceptional meeting – and relation – with the respected Masai elder, Matinta Ole Taek. Approaching the Basecamp founders, he urged them to establish a tourist enterprise that, unlike others would benefit also the Masai people.
